Metal oxide varistor also known as Zinc oxide varistor is installed in the surge arrester and has excellent nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics. Under normal operating voltage, it exhibits a large resistance and its leakage current is only in the microampere range. When overvoltage occurs, it immediately switches to low resistance, releases energy, and limits the overvoltage range. After the overvoltage disappears, it immediately restores high resistance to ensure the safe operation of the power system.

Application
